I tried a lot of things. I knew I wanted something that was both entrepreneurial and creative. But more than that, I wanted something that I could do and still have a fairly flexible schedule. Around that time, I started realizing how much I enjoyed doing photoshoots with my little daughter, and how many compliments I got on those pictures.
My husband is extremely supportive and always encourages me to run with my ideas and dreams. He built my first studio for me in our garage, and helped me learn a lot of things about cameras.
When we moved to our current location, I dove in headfirst to make it the biggest and best studio I could. A studio that did all the things all of the time. I tried a lot of things and I learned a lot of things. I worked a lot and I was stressed out a lot.
Today I am so thankful to be where I am with my business. Over the past year or more, I have been remembering why I wanted to start this in the first place- to have a creative outlet, and still spend a lot of time with my kids and run our home.
So, my business looks a lot different these days. Generally, my sessions take place during school hours or on Saturdays. I don’t take more than 3-4 sessions per week. I’ve cut out weddings almost entirely because they wipe out an entire day- a day when my kids are home from school. I don’t run a lot of promotions or advertising because I am pretty happy with my current workload. I haven’t been teaching workshops or classes even though that’s something I enjoy because they take a lot of prep time and tend to stress me out. I am thankful that I can make these changes because my husband is our main income provider (even though I remind him a lot that I make money too!). He also helps me with a lot of the business aspects that would seriously bog me down- like taxes and junk like that.
I am home with my kids after school and we have more family time on the weekends. My business is still growing and I am so thankful (and I admit I put in a lot of hours after the kids are in bed for the night). I love what I do. So many of you have come back to me again and again, and you feel more like friends than clients. I love your sweet babies and families, and I am so thankful for the opportunities to help you capture the beauty of this present moment you have with your loved ones. I know how fast the years fly by. I amazed that the tiny girl that I loved taking pictures of is almost 9 years old. I treasure those memories and those pictures, and I love giving you the gift of those precious memories with your children also.
